Join Us for a Historic Walking Tour: Celebrating James Baldwin's ParisI am Brian Scott Bagley, Founder of the Musée Josephine Baker et des Afro-Descendants de Paris.August 2, 2024, marks the centennial of James Baldwin's birth. Born on August 2, 1924, Baldwin moved to Paris in 1948, seeking the freedom to write and find his voice. Over the next five decades, he emerged as one of the most prolific writers, orators, civil rights activists, and essayists, inspiring communities worldwide, including the LGBTQIA+ community. To honor Baldwin's remarkable legacy, I invite you to join me on the James Baldwin in Paris Historic Walking Tour. As part of my Queer Black Paris Tour, also known as the Gay Black Paris-Gay Paris Noir Tour, I have had the joy of guiding visitors through the significant locations that Baldwin made famous with his presence. Since 2018, I have been offering this specialized James Baldwin in Paris tour upon specific requests, sharing Baldwin's incredible journey with those eager to learn more about his life in Paris. This year, to celebrate his centennial, it is important to share this tour with all who come to Paris and wish to explore the profound impact Baldwin had on this city. This special tour is dedicated to exploring and celebrating the places where Baldwin dined, wrote, and left his mark with his activism and words.Through extensive research, I have uncovered and highlighted these mythic locations that tell the most significant stories of Baldwin's time in Paris. As I lead these historic walking tours, it becomes clear that many sites of significance to Baldwin's life and work remain unexplored throughout Paris. In addition to taking this guided walking tour throughout James Baldwin's Paris which are unique as you will discover James Baldwin sites not often visited.

In addition your support will also contribute to the preservation work of the Musée Josephine Baker et des Afro-Descendants de Paris and their "Black Plaques in Paris Project," also known as "Les Afro-Descendants Plaques de Paris."

Our goal is to commemorate James Baldwin during his centennial year with a dedicated plaque in Paris.
